Winter Snow Removal Attachments for Tractors
Tackle winter’s challenges with our selection of efficient snow removal tractor attachments.
Whether you need to clear heavy snowfall or only a few inches at a time, whether you’re clearing a long driveway or a huge parking lot, we have the perfect snow removing solution for your tractor or skid steer.
Browse our selection of snow blowers, snow pushers, and snow plows, plus a few winter accessories you mind find helpful—even essential!
Snow Blowers For Tractors
The most expensive of the snow clearing options, Snow Blowers are an absolute necessity for some. If you need to throw your snow instead of pile it as you clear, consider a blower.
Our Preferred Snow Blower
Our preferred snow blower is the MK Martin Meteor Pull-Type Snow Blower. This model mounts to your 3-point hitch. Unlike a traditional 3-point snow blower, it allows you to clear while driving forward, instead of having to drive in reverse and twist your body and neck to see where you’re going.
The Meteor series is available with hydraulic or electric chute and deflector controls. And MK Martin’s new Performance Meteor has a built–in back drag to pull snow away from garage doors, retaining walls and parked cars.
Frame Mounted Snow Blower
You can get a frame mounted snow blower for the front of your tractor. These require more set up and a mid-PTO, and you’ll need to remove your loader for the winter.
Loader Mounted Snow Blower
You can also get a loader mounted blower, but you’ll need a hydraulic power pack to operate it on a tractor, as tractors don’t produce enough hydraulic flow to power a blower successfully.
However, put a loader mounted blower on a skid steer, and you’re off to the races as skid steers have plenty of hydraulic flow for the task.
Snow Pushers
If you’re looking for the best snow pusher for your tractor, look no further than the HLA Snow Pusher.
Available for 25 horsepower tractors up to enormous wheel loaders, HLA hands down makes the most robust, well-thought-out snow pusher available.
A radiused back keeps snow rolling, double-wall end plates remove the need for internal cross-bracing that traps snow, replaceable cutting edge and skid runners in rubber, steel, or our favorite UHMW (a hard, slippery plastic) are really just a few of the features that we love.
Talk about efficient, unlike your tractor’s bucket, there is no bottom to the pusher. Snow sticks to your bucket, and dumping it will take an exponentially longer each pass compared to using a pusher, where you push the snow to your pile, and immediately back away.
The HLA Snow Pusher is just an all-around great tractor attachment—easy to use, no moving parts, built like a tank, and it makes your life so much easier.
We’ve made a handful of videos about why we think this is the best snow removal choice for most tractor owners.
Snow Plows & Rear Blades For Tractors
If you want a simple blade to remove snow, we look to HLA again (they’re Canadian, so they know snow!). Their 1000 or 2000 Series Snow Blade feature spring-trip blades for safety, heavy duty mouldboards, and hydraulic angling kits.
Plows are simple tools (though not as simple as a Pusher) that are great for moving long lanes of snow off to one side or another. They also can be used to back drag snow away from walls and garage doors.
Similar to a plow is a rear blade, which goes on your tractor’s 3-point, as the name implies. We had success removing snow from our gravel drive by rotating the blade 180 degrees, so the cutting edge faced backwards and didn’t want to dig and pull gravel, but ran over the surface instead.
We carry a huge range of manual and hydraulic blades from Dirt Dog.
Cutting Edges for Snow Pushers and Snow Plows
Three options are always available for your Pusher or Plow’s cutting edge: rubber, steel, or UHMW (plastic).
- Steel is great for a gravel surface, as it’s the most durable and cuts into snow very well. Be careful though, as you shouldn’t use steel on nicely finished surfaces like concrete.
- Rubber is the most forgiving, and is used for the most delicate surfaces like stamped concrete, or stone, or brick.
- UHMW (our preferred cutting edge) as we say it “cuts like steel, but protects like rubber.” UHMW stands for Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. In more understandable terms, it’s smooth, slippery, hard plastic.
- You can replace these on existing snow attachments, and you can save money on UHMW by purchasing two pieces half the length you need, instead of one long piece.
- We also offer UHMW Skid Runners for HLA Snow Pushers.
Improve Traction on Snow and Ice
One challenge for snow removal is maintaining traction. When you’re trying to push snow or drive up a hill, and you’re just spinning your tires, it’s frustrating. And when you’re working around cars and buildings, it’s critical you don’t slip!
Frankly, the weight of your tractor just isn’t enough in the worst conditions. Here are several ways you can increase your traction.
Liquid Ballast
Add liquid ballast to your rear tires. This is a great idea for year-round safety whenever you use your front-end loader. Tractors are simply too light from the factory to use safely with a loader (your manual will tell you this also).
So, you must add weight to the rear of your tractor, and liquid ballast is an out-of-the-way always-with-you solution. We recommend Rim Guard as it’s the heaviest, all-natural liquid ballast available.
Direct 3-Point Weight
You can also add weight to your 3-Point, if you aren’t using it. We created the GWT VersaBracket to hang suitcase weights off to provide you that counterweight for your loader. You can also use our GWT Hitch Hangers to hang suitcase weights off your quick hitch, if you have one (if you don’t, we recommend the SpeeCo E-Hitch). Gain over 1,000 lb of ballast weight between these two solutions!
Of course, if you’re using a rear attachment, it will help with traction, unless you’re running it along the ground (like a snowblower). Then it won’t be putting downforce on your tires.
Tire Tread
We experimented with grooving our tires. It worked, but it was tiring and improvements weren’t major. But this is a cheap solution to trying to fix your tread pattern.
Still, the best traction for winter comes from having the right tire tread pattern. We love R14 Hybrid tires, and if you’re looking to change out to snow tires for the season, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta are a top choice.
Tire Chains
Lastly, if these methods aren’t enough, employ tire chains. We offer a 5% discount at tirechainsonline.com when you use code GWT. These will give you fantastic traction, with the caveats that you need to drive slowly and stay off any surface you don’t want marked up. Again, gravel is a great use case for tire chains.
